To gain entry to Ermysted's Grammar School children are required to pass the 11+. This consists of two 50 minute tests:
1) Verbal Reasoning and English
2) Non-Verbal Reasoning and Maths
2) Skipton Girl's High School
Skipton Girl's High School's entrance exam includes the following tests:
Maths
- 50 multiple choice
- 50 minutes
English
- 2 extracts with questions
- questions on spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Between 50 and 64 multiple choice
- 45/50 minutes
Verbal Reasoning
- 80-85 questions
- 50 minutes
How will your child's progress be measured?
I provide structured 1:1 tuition for children aiming to take the 11+ examinations. Following a baseline assessment in the subject areas your child will be tested on, I tutor using the most recent and relevant test materials, alongside materials that I have written myself.
Throughout the year I continue to assess your child's progress and respond to any gaps in learning by addressing these with learning support materials and ideas for you to do with your child at home.
When should my child begin preparing for the 11+?
Children need at least a year to prepare for the exam. At the end of Year 4 is a good time to do the baseline assessment with your child in order to prepare for them to begin weekly tuition in the October of Year 5. It's best not to leave it until the last minute. Cramming can be useful, but generally children need longer to build their confidence for the tests.
What can my child and I expect from the tuition?
Your child should bring along an A4 binder and their favourite pencil. It is essential for them to bring along the practice paper packs and the other materials that I will suggest. Once I get to know your child I can start to recommend ways for you to help and support them in their learning. This may be in the form of learning tips, books, recommended websites that I create links for on the Kids' Zone area of my website, games, puzzles and other specific activities.
